Can an AI agent make phone calls for you?

Published 26 October 2026

Yes โ€” an AI agent can dial a number, speak to whoever answers, leave a voicemail and report back to you. GROX does this from a single chat request: you describe the call, review a brief before it dials, and get a transcript in the chat when it is done. The catch is that phone calls are harder to automate reliably than they look, and a few situations still need a human voice.

What does a well-designed AI phone call actually look like?

A good AI call has four properties that protect both you and the person on the other end. First, it opens by saying it is an AI โ€” not because the law always requires it, but because deceiving someone into thinking they are speaking with a person undermines the whole interaction. Second, you see a brief before the call is placed, so you know exactly what the agent will say and can cancel if anything looks wrong. Third, the agent gathers information only: it does not buy, book, pay or agree to anything on your behalf. Fourth, it produces a record โ€” a transcript and a plain summary โ€” so you can act on what it found out.

A voicemail option matters too. Many calls go unanswered, and an agent that simply hangs up wastes the attempt. A good system leaves the message shown on the brief and can try once more before reporting back that no one answered.

The call opens by identifying itself as an AI, before any other business.
Pre-call brief
A summary of what will be said, shown to you before the agent dials, so you can review and cancel.
Information-only scope
The agent asks questions and notes answers; it never commits to a purchase, booking or payment.
Post-call report
A transcript and a plain summary returned to you, so you can decide what to do next.

Where do AI phone calls fall short?

Phones are not a clean channel. Many businesses and individuals now silence calls from unknown or unrecognised numbers, so the call may never be answered regardless of how well the agent speaks. Interactive voice response systems โ€” the press-1-for-billing menus common in large organisations โ€” can confuse an agent that expects a human to pick up. And some countries have rules about automated outbound calls that require registration, time-of-day restrictions or explicit consent from the recipient.

There is also a ceiling on what the call can accomplish. An agent that cannot commit to anything is genuinely useful for gathering information โ€” opening hours, availability, a reference number โ€” but if the other party needs a decision made in the moment, a human still has to be on the line.

How does GROX place a phone call for you?

On the GROX plan, you describe the call in the chat โ€” who to ring, what to find out, any context that helps. A card appears with the brief before anything is dialled: the number, the purpose and the opening it will use. Nothing is dialled until you approve the card. When you confirm, the call is placed, opening by saying it is an AI, and gathering only what you asked for. It never buys, books, pays or agrees to anything during the call.

If no one answers, a voicemail is left using the message shown on the card, with one further attempt available. After the call โ€” answered or not โ€” the chat receives a report of the result along with the full transcript. If the person called asks to ring you back, that request becomes a reminder rather than something that slips through the cracks.

Can an AI agent also phone you directly?

Yes, in the other direction too. You confirm your number once โ€” the agent reads a code out on a call and you enter it โ€” and from then on reminders can come as calls, a job finishing can trigger a call, or you can ask to be called right now. Calls judged urgent stay switched off unless you enable them, and when they are on they come only during the daytime and are spaced apart so they do not stack up.

One firm limit applies in both directions: nothing is approved, paid, sent or changed on a call. The call is a notification or a report, not a decision point.

Common questions

Does the AI say it is an AI at the start of the call?

Yes. GROX opens every outbound call by identifying itself as an AI before saying anything else. This applies regardless of whether the person who answers is expecting the call. It is a basic condition of the call being trustworthy.

Can the AI book an appointment or make a payment on the call?

No. GROX gathers information only during a call โ€” it asks questions and notes what it is told. It does not buy, book, pay or agree to anything on your behalf. If the call reaches a point where a commitment is needed, you will need to follow up yourself using the transcript provided.

What happens if the number does not answer?

A voicemail is left using the message shown on the pre-call card, and one further attempt can be made. After both attempts, the chat receives a report noting that there was no answer, along with what was left in the voicemail. If the person asks for a call back, GROX turns that into a reminder in the same chat.

How long does an AI call last, and can it handle phone menus?

GROX calls last at most five minutes. Interactive voice response menus โ€” the numbered options common in large organisations โ€” can interrupt the conversation flow and are not reliably handled. Calls to straightforward numbers where a person picks up work best.
